How to Plan a Custom Software Project
A practical starting point for defining scope, priorities and a useful first release.
Start with the workflow
Describe who will use the software, what they need to do and where the current process breaks down. Use real examples such as approving an order, scheduling an appointment or reconciling inventory. This turns a broad idea into requirements a team can review.
Define the first release
Separate the features needed for a usable product from improvements that can wait. Record acceptance criteria for each core workflow and identify dependencies such as data migration, payments or integrations. A focused first release makes delivery and feedback easier to manage.
Plan beyond development
Include testing, deployment, documentation, training and support in the project plan. Agree on who reviews work, how changes are approved and who owns accounts and source code. These decisions reduce uncertainty at handover.
