What to Consider Before Connecting Business Tools
Make API integrations easier to maintain by planning data ownership, permissions and failure handling.
Choose the source of truth
Decide which system owns each type of information. Your CRM might own contact details while your finance platform owns invoices. Document field mappings and update rules so an integration does not overwrite the right data with an older copy.
Plan for failures
APIs can be unavailable or reject requests. Agree on retries, duplicate prevention and alerts for failed transfers. Keep useful logs without exposing sensitive information, and give your team a way to reconcile records that need attention.
Document and maintain the connection
Record the endpoints, authentication method and expected data formats. Plan for API changes and expiring credentials. Test the complete business workflow, including updates and edge cases, before relying on the integration.
